简介：本剧描写关于源平合战时期原始麾下的源义经的平生。原作为村上元三的《源义经》，同时原作者也介入了剧作的编剧事情。虽然由原作者加入编剧但未能列入NHK原创大河剧之列。同2002年《利家和松》以及2011年《江~公主们的战国》大类，也描述了源义经的平生，从其母常盘和兄长们在雪原逃跑起头，到衣川馆自害，并及其兄源赖朝征服奥州等等都进行了着墨。扮演源义经的尾上菊之助是NHK大河剧史上最年青的主演（开播时23岁3个月），而且，打破此纪录的是在三十九年后的大河剧《义经》中扮演源义经的泷泽秀明（开播时22岁9个月）。尾上菊之助与扮演静御前的藤纯子在公演了这部电视剧后结缘成为一对连理。
